Not all databases have transitioned
yet. In some instances, including
exemptions, an FAA webpage states
the information has been moved to
the DRS, but the DRS link goes to the
original Automated Exemption System.
The FAA didn't create the DRS
just to put a wrench in our works. The
FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018
specifically required the agency to
develop a centralized safety guidance
database not later than one year after
the date of enacting the Act.
The Act outlined criteria for the
centralized database, including that
it encompass all of the regulatory
guidance documents of the FAA Office
of Aviation Safety; contain, for each
such guidance document, a link to the
Code of Federal Regulations provision
to which the document relates; and be
publicly available.
More than 65 document types have
been or are in the process of being
cataloged in the DRS.
In time, the DRS could be a great
resource for research, particularly if
you need historical information about
a rule, but don't expect the same
number of clicks you used to make to
find frequently referenced information.
The FAA seems to be aware of these
challenges, as it provides no fewer
than 40 help and training tutorials,
many with video content.
Consider spending some time in
the DRS before you need specific
information. You're more likely
to be successful using the new
platform if you experiment with it
during dedicated " relearning " time
rather than when you urgently need
information. q
