ver the last two months in this Theory &
Practice column, we covered what radio
is and how it's changed (modulation)
to send information. In this month's column, we
discuss how to get the radio waves from the air into a
radio and vice versa. We do these using antennas and
transmission lines. Knowledge about both is important
for troubleshooting, and of course, for the ASTM radio
communication systems endorsement to the aircraft
electronics technician certification.
As we talk about antennas and transmission lines,
we should keep in mind the rule of reciprocity. The
rule states whatever is true for transmitting is also true
for receiving. Subjectively speaking, a transmitting
problem may be more apparent to us. But rest assured,
if there is a problem in transmitting, there is a problem
in receiving. In the first segment of this series, we
discussed wavelength.
Wavelength determines the length of an antenna.
Most of the antennas used in aviation are either
¼ of a wavelength (λ) long, or ½ λ in length. As a
result, an astute observer can guess what an antenna
is used for by looking at it. In addition, there is
one specific frequency or wavelength on which the

antenna works best. As the frequency deviates from
this specific value, the efficiency of the antenna will
degrade. Engineers will design the antennas to work
the best in the center of the frequency band intended to
be used. They will further design it in such a way to be
efficient enough for the whole band, even though the
antenna's effectiveness will degrade as the frequency
deviates from the center frequency.
