We call the energy traveling in the correct direction the incident wave.
Energy traveling in the wrong direction is called the reflected wave. The
incident wave and the reflected wave will add algebraically to form a
standing wave. The standing wave has no place to go, so the energy from
it will be dissipated as heat. High-quality aviation communication radios
have built-in protection against standing or reflected waves, but some
transmitting systems may not.
When it comes to troubleshooting transmission lines and antennas, the
technician should be aware symptoms can change with frequency. The
location of a frayed coaxial cable may render a problem barely noticeable
on one frequency but fairly obvious on another. Technicians must also keep
in mind that antennas are affected by any metal object nearby. As a result,
testing antennas in the hangar may yield falsely good results, or the opposite.
Next month, we will examine the radios themselves, spending most
of our time on radio receivers. Like all of these stories, those studying
for the RCS endorsement exam to the AET certification test should dig
deeper into these subjects. This story is just a starting point. q
