" That service member gets the chance to go into the
avionics world immediately and find out whether or not
it's right, " Berryhill agreed. " They get more clarity earlier
to help figure out what they want to do with their career. "
Outside of SkillBridge, companies in the general aviation
industry can also work alone or in conjunction with
local military bases, educational institutions, and aviation
associations to establish their own military talent pipeline
programs - like internships, externships, apprenticeships,
scholarships and mentorships - as a means of routinely
identifying and recruiting new sources of military talent
to meet their aviation maintenance staffing needs.
As another hiring incentive to draw talent, some companies
also offer veterans relocation bonuses and other
assistance to help with the career change.
Companies that have already successfully hired and
retained veterans on staff should consider creating a
veteran legacy group or diversity hire group in support
of continued military recruitment and retention efforts,
McManus added.
" Talk to veterans on staff; ask if someone is qualified
based on their experience; use veterans on your staff
during the interview process to talk up the company, "
McManus said. " When you're looking to hire veterans,
it's got to be a match, so have military members who
are already in your employment sit on that hiring or
onboarding team to help recruit for you. They speak the
language. "
Why hire veterans?
Veterans are an important source of skilled talent who
often have superior technical training and leadership
skills when compared to their peer group, McManus
noted, who himself served in the Air Force for 20 years.
