report to them. They've been tried
and tested under the most challenging
conditions, and they come with
a get-the-mission-done attitude, "
he said.
" As the avionics manager for a
Part 145 MRO, I'm in a position
where I hire veterans, " said King
Aerospace's James Hubbard, an Air
Force veteran who worked on C130
avionics during his six years in the
service. " What we predominantly do
is bring in people as contractors, and
once they contract for six months or
so, we bring them on as a full-time
position.
" We do a lot of military hiring.
When I look at resumes, I like to
see military experience, because it
tells me they can commit to something
- they can commit to a job and
commit to a company. Hiring veterans
also helps the company reduce
turnover rates because they'll come
in and stay. When we bring in new
people, we have two days of required
training that we do. From the company's
standpoint, if you're constantly
turning people over, that's money
wasted on training. "
Hubbard believes that managers
benefit from hiring veterans due to
their loyalty, proven track record, and
transferable skills. " Usually, veterans
will come with experience because
they've done this job or an associated
job when they were in the military, "
he said. " They also will have a respectful
attitude to how they approach
other employees, and they are usually
detail-oriented, because those things
are required in the military. "
Berryhill noted that veterans are
typically good team players with
well-developed soft skills and high
emotional intelligence, all qualities
developed and honed during military
service. He said that companies
hiring veterans are typically looking
for skilled workers who can fold into
the organization seamlessly and get a
group to work together as one.
" Due to the cornucopia of people
who show up for boot camp and the
way they train while in the service,
veterans as a general rule help make
companies good partners in the communities
they're in, " Berryhill said.
Additionally, because the military often
has access to cutting-edge technology
before the civilian world receives
it, employers are drawn to the advanced
technical skills veterans bring to the job
and their ability to serve as subject-matter
experts on new and emerging aviation
technologies.
