AEA workforce resources
In the past few years, the AEA has made strides in developing
and strengthening its resources for military personnel
and veterans interested in finding aviation maintenance jobs
and exploring careers in this industry, as well as for member
companies looking to hire them.
One of the AEA's most-powerful benefits for both veterans
and employers alike is its jobs board site at aea.net/jobs, a onestop
shop to bring technicians and companies together and help
technicians find jobs that are local to them. The association also
offers useful training resources, an apprenticeship program, and
a scholarship program for those transitioning to civilian jobs.
The AEA recently partnered with NextOp to increase its
outreach to veterans and share information with companies
about the benefits of hiring military talent through briefings at
military bases, job fairs and aviation industry events across the
United States. NextOp connects pre-screened candidates with
companies at no cost to the veteran or the employer.
The AEA workforce committee and its military veteran
subcommittee are focused on ways to bring more veterans into
aviation. " We need to do a better job of showing people who
general aviation is, " Berryhill said.
The committee also is working on developing new AEA
training offerings, such as a basic electronics and electricity
course, which could help transition AMTs to avionics technicians
more quickly and easily. " BEE was the first course I
took after Navy boot camp, " Berryhill said. " It's the foundation
on which all of electronics is built, and companies like
Cirrus have a need for people with this knowledge. "
Though the committee is still working on what content for
new AEA courses will look like, Berryhill noted that the program
will support veterans who received their AMT training
while in the service more easily level up to becoming avionics
technicians after entering the civilian workforce. The training
also will help them " work faster and become a more-relevant
technician in the shop, " by being able to perform more
advanced tasks like continuous airworthiness inspections and
return-to-service, he said.
Berryhill is pleased to see the way that employers across
industries today have a greater awareness of and respect for
military talent compared to when he first joined the Navy 30
years ago. " Organizations are realizing the benefits of hiring
veterans. I hear that more often, and whenever I hear that
companies are veteran-friendly, that's exciting. " q
