Figure 3 shows one version of an AM transmitter
like those used in aviation VHF communication radios.
In a simple sense, transmitters are mostly high-power
amplifiers. During transmit, the SMO changes from the
local frequency provided to the mixer to the frequency
to be transmitted. Typically, there will be a buffer
stage between the SMO and the rest of the transmitter.
This amplifier is there to keep the two sections of the
radio separate so one doesn't affect the other. Starting
with the pre-driver, the configuration of a particular
communications transmitter may change. High-powered
transmitters will have more amplification stages, and lowpowered
transmitters will have less. Here, we show three
stages of amplification: pre-driver; driver; and final. In
this model, the final is where the modulation enters.
As the pilot speaks into the microphone, audio is
created, which will be amplified by the microphone
amplifier. Many radios take an output from the
microphone amplifier and provide it to the headsets so
the pilot can hear his voice. Outside the aviation world,
this might be called monitor; we call it sidetone. The
modulator uses the audio to control the gain of the final
amplifier of the transmitter, thus amplitude modulating the
radio frequency. From the final amplifier, the signal passes
through a transmit receive switch and on to the antenna.
Keep in mind, this model is one of many. Engineers can
design transmitters to modulate all stages or any of the
single stages within the transmitter.
Figures 2 and 3 are combined into a single unit called
a transceiver. This story has merely scratched the surface
of radio receiver and transmitter theory of operation.

certificate will need to study all the different receivers and
transmitters.
