The company handles Part 91, Part 135, and general aviation work. Before the
pandemic hit, Leading Edge was doing lots of ADS-B installations and a record
number of Wi-Fi installs. In 2021, the company was busy with safety upgrades
including digital autopilots and panel upgrades backed by attractive promotional
discounts. A digital autopilot not only improves safety but also increases the value of
an aircraft.
AOG support will come from all four locations, and it will be centrally operated.
In one example, Leading Edge was able to take a call at 11 p.m. from a jet operator
who flew a prominent customer from the East Coast to Burbank. The aircraft was
going to be stuck on the ground the next morning. With help from Leading Edge, the
aircraft was in commission and ready for takeoff from Burbank the next day at first
light. The list of people notified when an AOG call comes in includes the senior sales
engineers and even Brewer, the CEO. As she puts it, " we make sure we're available
to the customer 24/7. "

One noteworthy project in 2021 was the upgrade of a Cessna 414 purchased in
California. The aircraft was in need of modern avionics to fly back to Portugal.
Leading Edge installed a Garmin G600 TXi with input to the S-Tec 65 autopilot. A
10.6-inch display provided a large moving map. The pilot can now change waypoints
on his iPad and load changes to the GNS 430W. After the installation was complete,
and the aircraft delivered back to the customer, there wasn't a single squawk on the
transcontinental and transoceanic flight from California to Portugal.
Leading Edge also installs the latest Garmin systems in King Airs like the King
Air B210 it modified in 2019. The install included a Garmin G600 TXi glass touchscreen
with a full set of Garmin equipment in the center stack. Pilots find it easy
to configure the display to their liking. Removing old wiring helped eliminate a
maintenance headache and reduced weight.
Leading Edge is a Platinum Garmin supplier. This puts it in the top 10% of shops
worldwide. When the company's technicians find interface issues, it often turns out to
be related to software, and Garmin appreciates the heads up on what will be needed
in a fix. Leading Edge's senior technician has a wealth of knowledge from working
on the Cessna manufacturing line.
Brewer previously worked as the chief operating officer for Manclark at the
Costa Mesa-based Leading Edge Aviation Services Inc. At the time, Manclark grew
the company into the largest aircraft painting company in the world, serving both
commercial and military aircraft. It was doing $60 million in business when Brewer
left a few years after Manclark sold it in 2012 to a venture capital firm. The company
even painted Air Force One.
" I loved the entrepreneurial spirit in that kind of company, " Brewer said. This is
why she is back working at a rapidly growing avionics company as CEO of Leading
Edge Avionics.
Manclark continues as chairman of Leading Edge but spends time in Aspen,
Colorado, restoring OV-10 aircraft and working on his nonprofit philanthropy,
Mangic. In addition to OV-10s, he owns a Citation VII, an Albatross, and is
buying a Cub. q
