the parameters of whatever satellite or air-to-ground system is
installed on a particular aircraft. Of course, if you want to use all
of the system's capabilities at full speed, you'll need a highercapacity
data pipe.
Anthem offers multiple levels of autonomy
Autonomy has become synonymous with pilot-optional
type operation, but in fact, as Motivala explained, there are
actually two pieces to an autonomous future.
" The first is OEM autonomy - making the system where
the manufacturer is not so highly dependent on any tier-one
supplier, " he said. " It gives the OEM greater flexibility to make
changes and advancements faster as new technologies emerge.
" As for autonomy from the aircraft, when you talk about
things like reduced crew interactions, single-pilot type
capabilities, and into non-piloted operations, those things are
more in the future. Anthem's operating architecture and pilot
interface is unique and very simple to use. It is designed to
provide capabilities across all types of autonomy. "
Another thing that makes Anthem different from priorgeneration
Honeywell Aerospace avionics offerings - or
any others for that matter - is that, as noted earlier, this one
platform has been created for use in any type of aircraft, be
they manned or unmanned.
In fact, the company has announced the first two
applications for the cloud-connected avionics suite will be
aboard new piloted eVTOLs: Vertical Aerospace's VA-X4 and
Lilium's new Lilium Jet.
As for where and when Anthem will land in the front office
of a certified business jet, Motivala wasn't at liberty to share
which OEM is first in line. He did say, though, that, they are
targeting a new airframe that will be certified in the 2024/2025
time frame.
Anthem will be highly secure
The benefits of an always-on cloud connection are many,
but so are the risks. Cybercrime is a hot topic these days, and
business aircraft are temping targets for many reasons.
Motivala stressed that from the day the decision was made
to develop the Anthem cloud-connected platform, Honeywell
Aerospace made cybersecurity a top priority.
" Without the guarantee of a totally secure connection, many
of the value-added benefits would be gone, " he said. " We
made sure that it is fully compliant with zero trust architecture
standards, including (RTCA) DO326, and NIPS (Networkbased
Intrusion Protection System) 800-207.
" Secondly, there is a secure cockpit browser partition
between the avionics and the communications side of the
system. Any traffic between these two partitions must pass
through multiple proprietary checks. Also, every application
that the operator loads are controlled - similar to the way
Apple does it - by a closed ecosystem. Any applications will
have to be certified by Honeywell or the aircraft's OEM. "
Hello, Anthem
While we've dug deep into all of the workings behind
the screens, we haven't talked about what the face of
Anthem will look like. Front and center will be the 9-inch
touchscreen pilot interface display unit, which will feature
a smart scratchpad capability.
" You can quickly write down clearances or frequencies
or other information and then download the information
directly into Anthem, " Motivala said. " It saves a lot of time.
It's all about making the entire system easier to operate for
the pilots. "
And while we're on the subject of display screens, you
may be surprised to learn that Anthem's displays are going
to use 2K technology instead of the current 4K standard.
Why, you ask?
" When it comes to the higher-temperature ranges in
today's cockpits, we found that 4K would not provide the
functionality and reliability we required, " Motivala explained.
" At least today's 4K technology won't meet those DO-178
requirements. Over time, 4K display technology will evolve,
and when it does, we will make the change. "
And don't for a second think the 2K displays won't deliver
on the highest level of graphical quality or capabilities. In
fact, Motivala said Anthem will introduce a host of display
capabilities that will dramatically enhance the aircraft's
operational safety on the ground and in the air.
For example, Anthem can significantly reduce the
potential for ground collisions, runway incursions, and
runway excursions by 50% with several new features that
provide pilots with unprecedented situational awareness.
Those features include the 3D Runway Overrun Alerting and
Awareness System and 3D Airport Moving Maps.
According to its preliminary information, Anthem also
provides the cleanest, most functional symbology available
today, a track-based Synthetic Vision System, plus the
" industry's best " Integrated Navigation Map and Vertical
Situation Display.
As for what it will be like to fly with Anthem, as you might
expect like all of its Honeywell Aerospace predecessors, the
system will be fun.
" Pilot interactions will be like what you experience with
your iPad; simple, quick, and intuitive, " Motivala said. " It will
be an engaging and rewarding experience for the pilots. Every
feature and application is designed to enable greater ease of
use during every phase of the flight, with the goal of making
operations more efficient and much safer. " q
