" They have a heck of a reputation, a great product
and the best support in the industry, " he said. " We've
completed several Cessna 180/185s with Garmin
avionics for our customers. We're looking to get
everyone together at a special event this spring. "
When it comes to installing a new panel, Roundtree
likes to create one that's custom-designed for the owneroperator.
He sees each new panel as an opportunity
to get the customer involved and personalize the
experience with a variety of choices, from the layout of
the instruments to the panel's finish.
" As long as it's not structural, the sky's the limit, "
said Roundtree, who likes hiring avionics technicians
with an A&P license because it helps save customers
time and money. " We can put in lighted rocker switches,
push button start systems and other modern features.
We can bring a 1970s airplane up to today's standards
for far less than the cost of buying a new one. Doing
avionics work during an inspection saves operators
$1,000 because we already have the aircraft apart. "
In addition to serving outside customers, Roundtree's
avionics team also helps maintain the aircraft for
the company's Part 135 charter and flight training
businesses as well as the owners' private aircraft - a P51
Mustang, F-86 Sabre jet, F8F Bearcat and T6 Texan,
which they fly in air shows, charity events and other
special functions.
Jeff Wood, president, general manager and son of
the late founder Tom Wood, served 20 years in the U.S.
Air Force as an F-16 fighter pilot and a member of the
Thunderbirds demonstration squadron.
Still, 95% of the team's work is helping operators of
smaller general aviation aircraft enhance flight safety by
adding modern technology to the cockpit.
" People are spending money, $50,000 to $150,000, on
their avionics, " Roundtree said. " They really want that
safety. They want the luxury of lightening their load in
the cockpit. We're here to help. Word of mouth has been
our only advertisement. We've been really blessed. " q
