of experience in fixed-wing and
rotorcraft maintenance and is also a
helicopter pilot. Prior to aviation, she
served in both the Norwegian Army
and Air Force primarily as a technical
officer and also as a maintenance
officer and avionics/radio officer
with training in light air defense,
specifically the Robotsystem 70 and
surface radar.
In August 2021, Byler's Federal
Aviation Administration Part 145
repair station became an authorized
Garmin dealer, a goal she's eyed for
years. This newest dealership adds to
Byler's growing list, which includes
Avidyne, S-TEC, Aspen Avionics and PS
Engineering.
In between traveling for off-site

central Washington, Mari
Byler is one of the few experts
who maintain helicopters in the area.
Kept busy by customers across the
region, she tends to helicopters as
well as small general aviation aircraft,
including Pipers, Beechcraft and
Cessnas. The helicopters are mainly
working Robinsons, specifically R44
and R66 used for agricultural spraying,
and the occasional Schweizer and
Hiller.

up on customers' projects in her
own hangar, Byler took some time to
discuss how she started in aviation,
the complications of private aircraft
ownership in Norway, drying cherry
trees with helicopter downwash,
and establishing her own aircraft
maintenance and avionics shop.
How did you get
started in aviation?
I'm from Norway. I came to the
U.S. to get my helicopter license. My
intention was to go back to Norway
and fly offshore. When I was doing my
training in Snohomish, I met Albert,
who is now my husband. My plans
changed.

Why were you
interested in
offshore flying?
I watched a movie when
I was younger. It had a
helicopter that hovered over
a building, and I was like, I'm
going to fly those. Although
my interest was piqued, we
don't have Apache helicopters
in Norway.
I decided on the next
best thing that I knew of -
offshore flying in Norway. I
grew up on the coast, and
we saw the helicopters going
out into the North Sea every
day, and I knew people who
worked on the oil riggs. I
also figured it could help
pay off a student loan more
quickly since learning to fly
helicopters isn't cheap.
Why did you choose to
learn to fly in the U.S.?
I contemplated earning my license
through the Norwegian Air Force, but
I knew I would have to sign on for 15
years, and that sounded like a long
time. I had already spent six years in
the Army and wasn't sure if I wanted
to stay in uniform any longer, though
I went on to serve in the Air Force for
two years. The next best thing was
coming to the U.S., no requirements to
sign up.
In Seattle, Washington, Mari Byler recently
installed a Genesys HeliSAS Autopilot and
Stability Augmentation System in a Robinson R44.
