NEST Engineering's technicians upgraded the organization's two S76C++ helicopters with a full suite of avionics and equipment. The new panels include dual
Avidyne IFD550 FMS/GPS/nav/comm, Avidyne AXP322 transponder, Cobham DACS digital audio, Axnes Wireless ICS, L3Harris ESI-500 standby, BendixKing
RDR 2100 weather radar, Tait TM9455 and Cobham NPX138N FM radios, Flightcell DZMx satellite and cellular system, Cobham DF938 direction finder, dual
True Blue Power TI1202 medical inverters, night vision imaging system, dual iPads, controllable searchlights, USB outlets and a Max-Viz 2300 IR camera.
" It's not uncommon to see a flight depart IFR to
one of the smaller hospitals in the region, attain visual
reference at the bottom of the approach then convert
to night vision goggles for the remainder of the flight, "
said Steve Couchman, who serves as pilot, base manager
and deputy flight operations manager for NEST. He has
accumulated 26 years of flying, 17 of which has been with
the nonprofit. " It may even culminate in a night winch
retrieval once the patient is located. "
NEST's mission territory covers New Zealand's
Northland region, which extends from Kaiwaka up to
Cape Reinga at the northern most tip of the North Island.
" We've conducted winch missions up to 150 nautical
miles offshore, " Couchman explained. " We're often
involved in interhospital transfers, which can sometimes
take us to other regions, and also provide extra support
for other regions during natural disaster relief such as
responding to the Christchurch earthquakes in 2011 and
the White Island eruption in 2019. "
Essential engineering support
Back at its base and Part 145 repair station in Whangārei,
NEST's team of aircraft engineers ensure the helicopters
keep flying these lifesaving missions - on average three
missions per 24-hour period with one-third of the flights at
night.
