W
hen you step back
and look at COVID19's
overall impact on
business and private aviation, you might
say it's been darn good for business.
As early as 2021, companies and
individuals who never before dreamed
of owning an airplane are jumping in
feet first.
The good news is that sales of new
and pre-owned aircraft are literally
through the roof. The better news is,
because many of those aircraft need
upgrades to their legacy engine, interior,
paint and avionics, it seems the majority
of shops are extremely busy.
Of course, the fly in this euphoric
ointment is the ongoing supply chain
issues we're all facing. Whether it's
new cars or cans of beans, things can
be hard to find. And aviation hasn't
escaped it. As of early February,
avionics manufacturers were quoting up
to a nine-month wait for many popular
products. Yikes!
This may be acceptable if you're
planning a panel upgrade to your
aircraft in that time frame. But what do
you do if some key component in your
panel decides to up and die? Things
never break when you don't need them.
The obvious solution for aircraft
owners is to buy pre-owned. The
shelves of avionics shops are crammed
full of them. Right? Well, maybe. Or,
better yet, you no doubt save some
money if you buy what you need online.
Well, maybe not.
Regardless, let's start by taking a look
at the two main reasons why an aircraft
owner might buy pre-owned avionics
as soon as possible: upgrading/adding
capabilities or replacing a box that's
broken.
A bridge too far
Let's say you're starting to fly a lot more,
and you want to upgrade your avionics to
add WAAS or simply want a larger MFD
screen. The problem is you can't get the
new unit you truly want. As we noted, it's
not an unusual situation today.
" Buying pre-owned is always an
option, and, in fact, we've seen a bit
of an uptick in it because of the supply
chain situation, " explained Kirk Fryar,
president of Sarasota Avionics in Venice,
Florida. " We have customers now who
want a new Garmin GTN but can't
wait the nine months. We're installing
an older 430/530W, or Avidyne or
BendixKing unit now.
" Then, when the GTN becomes
available, we will take this bridge unit
back in trade - not for the same price,
but it's a good deal - and install the GTN
they want. Fortunately, when we install
the bridge unit, we do some of the work
we would do to install the GTN, so that
will save the owner a little on the next
installation. It helps a bit. "
Of course, bridge installations aren't
the only time owners will install legacy
avionics. In many instances, owners do
it to add new capabilities or replace an
inoperative unit without dishing out tens
of thousands of dollars on a major panel
upgrade.
" We see that a lot with owners needing
to replace their old Cessna ARC or
King KX-series nav/comms, " said Matt
Schloss, installation manager for Gulf
Coast Avionics in Lakeland, Florida.
" Those things quit, and there's no way
to affordably fix them. They basically
want a pull-out, plug-in replacement. Of
course, it's not always that easy.
