manual shows what you want to add is approved for your
package. "
" Yes, we can replace these legacy radios with newergeneration
units, but it's still an old radio. We have
no idea how long it will last. While the unit isn't that
expensive, you also have to add the cost of mounting
brackets and wiring harnesses. Those can be very
expensive, if you can find them. "
Schloss said that in many instances, because of all of
the peripherals needed to swap out avionics, the bottomline
cost for buying and installing pre-owned radios can
be close to the cost of a brand-new unit - if you can find
one.
" Maybe you can find a good pre-owned King KX155 for
$3,000 or so, " Schloss said. " A brand-new Garmin GNC
255A is around $4,800. Yes, the Garmin is $1,800 more,
but it comes with more features and a two-year warranty.
The used King unit is covered for 90 days at best.
" While the installation cost is about the same for
either unit before we install any pre-owned box, we have
to bench test it to know it works. That's an added cost
owners don't think about. If it fails the test, we don't
know if we can fix it.
" There are also times that, because we know there is
no support from the OEM, even if the unit works now,
we won't install it. That never turns out good for the
aircraft's owner or us. "
Will you need an STC?
We all know having a valid " yellow " or 8130 tag for
any pre-owned avionics you intend to install in a certified
airplane is job one. Without that, just walk away.
But another less obvious but equally important point
to keep in mind is whether or not said avionics unit is
STC'd for your particular aircraft's configuration.
" There are many situations where there is an STC
(supplemental type certificate) on older equipment, "
Fryar said. " But it may not extend to the newer stuff.
Before you buy anything - especially from an online
source - you need to work with an avionics shop to find
out if what you want is STC'd to work with what is
already in your panel.
" It can be especially complicated, especially when
you look at all the various avionics you can have in your
panel. Often a newer GPS navigator has to interface with
multiple instruments and avionics. There may not be an
STC covering everything. Just make sure the installation

Fryar said that while the various avionics OEMs do
a great job of creating STCs to cover an ever-widening
array of units, you still need to do your homework. And
that goes double if you are buying a pre-owned autopilot,
something both of our experts stress is only an option in
specific situations. More on that later.
Of course, while getting the right STC is a major
hurdle, even with that in hand, you're not always home
free. You still need to locate all of the appropriate wiring
harnesses and mounting hardware to put it all together. It
can be extremely difficult to get right if you don't know
exactly what you are doing.
Beware of the orphaned autopilot
Of all the various types of avionics you should
consider buying pre-owned, autopilots are the handsdown
exception, except in specific situations.
" If it's a direct replacement for the unit you have in
your airplane now, it can be a great option; it's a plugand-play
swap, " Schloss said. " Other than that, you never
want to buy a pre-owned autopilot for a certified airplane.
There are just too many unknowns. First is whether the
STC is applicable to your airplane.
" Let's say you have an S-TEC 30 that originally
came out of a Cessna 172N. That autopilot's controller
comes with information - pitch and roll rates - for that
particular year and model. You can't just put that in
another 172; not unless you know it's exactly the same.
It's a nightmare. But we have unsuspecting buyers
wanting to do that all the time. "
Schloss shared a recent example of a customer who
got a " great deal " on an autopilot from a Cessna 172 and
wanted to install it in his Cessna 210.
" Yes, there's an STC for that autopilot in a 210, but
the unit originally came out of a 172, " Schloss said. " The
servos and computer are set up totally different than what
he needed for his 210. In addition, all of the mounting
and servo brackets are different for the 210. By the time
you go out and buy the correct STC package and get all
the servos retorqued and computer reprogrammed, you
are within a couple thousand dollars of installing a brandnew
autopilot. And the new one can do more.
" When you're talking about buying and installing a
$20,000-plus piece of equipment, it's just not worth it.
It's still a used system with a limited warranty and an
unpredictable lifespan. "
