I
f ever there existed doubt about the viability, the
appeal, of free services, the months leading up
to Jan. 1, 2020, offered up ample evidence to the
contrary. As soon as pilots discovered the free weather
and free traffic graphics available via ADS-B In, savvy
pilots started scooping up electronic flight bag programs
by the thousands.
Indeed, there are multiple factors
driving these sales. For example,
the opportunity is available to dump
pounds of air-navigation charts,
instrument approach plates and the
standard instrument departures,
standard terminal arrival procedures
and the easy-to-manage updates - as
easy as a few keystrokes in the EFB.
But foremost for many pilots were

Oh, pilots and operators still need ADS-B Out to meet
the Federal Aviation Administration's mandate. But for
pilots able to eschew ADS-B Out or able to meet the
mandate with a self-contained system such as uAvionix's
echoUAT or skySensor, a stand-alone ADS-B In option
fulfills many pilots' needs.

systems largely came in the form of stand-alone tools
designed for a specific hazard - weather, for example,
or traffic or terrain. These independent tools worked
well - at least for those with the wallet-power to afford
their price and the accompanying
installation costs.
Most of those traffic systems
also offered the benefits of working
actively, triggering pings from
the systems within range. That
active benefit could complicate
installation, particularly in
pressurized aircraft. The single,
sometimes dual antennae required
penetrating the pressure vessel -
in two places for dual-antennae
systems. Such systems held great
appeal for fast, high-flying aircraft.
But for the majority of owners
and operators, flying nonpressurized
aircraft at lower
altitudes, the costs of these active systems were often
prohibitive. And with ample bandwidth in the 978
MHz band available for ADS-B In broadcasts, the FAA
found a carrot to ease some of the pain of the stick - the
mandate to install ADS-B Out by Jan. 1, 2020.
With the advent of compact devices such as the
Apple iPad capable of receiving those signals, the
FAA invested in two services many aviators quickly
embraced. Scientific evidence reinforced the idea, and
