For the REBTECH leadership team, Thompson's knowledge
of the global aviation parts market in particular is seen as vital to
the company's future success. When Thompson talks of his early
days learning the parts business, it feels like the kind of tedious
experiences and repetitive tasks that turn a reluctant newbie into
an expert.
" As with many old and bolds, you gain a wide repertoire of
skills as you progress through your career, " Thompson said.
" For three years, I was given the rather odious task of having to
close down one of BAE Systems' largest factories at Woodford,
Manchester. I was tasked with disposing of all the parts from the
site. The same was asked of me at BAE's
Prestwick facility, too. It exposed me to the
world of spares and one which I would continue
when selling rotables and overhauls
for Heli-One and CHC Helicopter. "
When Thompson took over business
development for Vector Aircraft Leasing
in 2013, he put his knowledge of the parts
world to the test again - this time designing
power-by-the-hour packages to support the
Puma aircraft the company was leasing.
Planning, practicalities

Thompson began his career in the Royal
Air Force, where he served 27 years as
an aircraft engineer, specializing in avionics
for transport, fighter and helicopter

squadrons. He maintained a variety of fixed- and rotary-wing
aircraft, including the Boeing CH-47 Chinook, Sikorsky S-61,
AĆ©rospatiale Gazelle, Airbus Helicopters Super Puma, Lockheed
C-130 Hercules, Lockheed L-1011 TriStar and British Aerospace
146. During his last tour, Thompson managed the United
Kingdom's Special Forces Flight, providing air transport to the
U.K. and NATO special forces teams.
Thompson considers his military experience valuable to his
success in business development and at REBTECH.
" In the military, it's all about planning and practicalities, how
to utilize the tools and people you have to get the biggest impact
possible; it's the same here, " he said. " I have a finite resource,
yet I need to strategize how I can keep the company current
and profitable now, while strategizing for the future. It's about
spending wisely and when only necessary, and ensuring that on
each financial advancement, there is a well-thought-out ROI. "
Despite juggling all of these objectives at once, Thompson has
landed on a few important goals already in his short time with
REBTECH.
" My goal is to consolidate REBTECH's position within the
current NVG retrofit world whilst increasingly exposing them
to the new-generation technology that is becoming necessary in

the modern world, " he said. " This includes fusion vision, which
combines NVG and thermal imaging, AI-driven imaging systems
and advanced systems for aerial firefighting. "
After studying the company for six months, Thompson realized
he could leverage the talents of its young, highly qualified engineers
to expand REBTECH's capabilities and provide additional
opportunities for staff and customers. In March at HAI Heli-Expo
2022, REBTECH announced it's working to create a new division
dedicated to aviation engineering support, REMS (REBTECH
Engineering Management Solutions).
" Together with the CEO and VP, we're looking at the skill sets
and capabilities that exist within REBTECH
today, " he said. " We're rapidly building
a powerful engineering team of avionics
designers, mechanical engineers and logistics
specialists from our existing personnel. "
In addition to introducing new skills and
products, Thompson is keen to expand the
parameters of REBTECH's night vision
lighting market. He spends as much time as
possible learning about operators' needs and
requirements, a tactic Thompson has honed
over his many years in business development.
" I look at all options - civil and military
aviation, rotary- and fixed-wing, " he said. " I
strongly believe that REBTECH can offer a
good solid choice no matter what size fleet
they have. I have clients with a single R44
up through to the U.S. State Department and
Department of Defense and other international government fleets.
Each one is equally important. "
Learning languages, international diplomacy
All the years of global travel have trained Thompson to speak
four languages - English, Dutch, French and Spanish, although
he's quick to point out, not quite fluently.
" I can order a beer in all of them, " he said, laughing.
" Seriously, I speak French fairly confidently, same with Dutch.
This comes from firstly living in Holland and having a Dutch
wife. The immersive experience cannot be beaten. The same with
French. I was the COO at Vallair for a while. The offices were in
Luxembourg, and my two major factories were in Chateauroux
and Montpellier in France. "
Thompson recalls standing at a podium to address the workers
in Montpellier and suddenly realizing he didn't speak much
French, and they didn't speak English.
" You soon learn to sink or swim, " he said. " My Spanish is
improving with my work in Mexico, although I do have trouble
with the dialects. "
