small errors from the reference, referred to here as gyro trim. At
the top of the figure is the pitch attitude command. This control
will adjust the aircraft nose up, nose down, or level. Both of
these adjustments put errors into the system. The pitch attitude
command will insert an error voltage large enough to cause the
autopilot to readjust the nose up or down. The gyro trim adjustment
is not available to the pilot. The technician will adjust the
gyro trim to insert a small error opposite of the error inherent in
the reference.
This diagram shows an altitude reference. Like an altimeter,
the altitude reference is connected to the static system and
senses air pressure. When the pilot switches to altitude hold
mode, the altitude reference will set the current altitude at zero
and produce error voltages if the air pressure deviates. In more
sophisticated systems, the pilot can select an altitude. The
aircraft will adjust nose up or nose down to seek the altitude
selected.
Figure 1 shows a coupler for vertical guidance, originally
known as a glideslope coupler because a glideslope receiver
was the only device capable of vertical navigation. Now, vertical
navigation is also available from a GPS or an IRS.
The coupler takes error voltages or messages from the glideslope,
GPS or IRS and converts them to error voltages suitable
for the summing junction and the amplifier.
With the example system shown here, the pilot can use the
autopilot to climb, descend, maintain an altitude, or follow
navigate vertically.
Throttle control
With the exception of larger jets, nearly all general aviation
autopilots leave throttle control under the command of the pilot.
As a result, setting a pitch attitude or pressing altitude hold is only
a first step. The pilot must set the throttle(s) properly for climb,
descent or level flight.
The sophisticated autopilots with throttle control use the same
basic principles with references, error signals, and servos.
In most piston-powered airplanes, a two-axis autopilot works
well, and the third axis won't be necessary. Nevertheless, we will
discuss rudder control next month. q
