Are there bigger, broader aviation trade shows than
AEA's? Absolutely. But the AEA event isn't about
the engines and airframes you'll see at other shows.
Instead, it's all about the avionics: what they can do, the
problems they can solve. It's about how new technology
and connectivity work and play well with those engines
and airframes. So at this year's event, as in previous
years, you didn't see a fly-in static display of aircraft or
cabin mock-ups on the exhibit hall floor. Instead, you
saw the international avionics industry up close and
personal, from the startups and mom and pop companies
promoting things you didn't know you needed, to the
household-name avionics and consumer-goods goliaths,
and to everything in the broad space between.
In other words, the 2022 edition of the AEA
Convention featured the same proven attractions as
previous versions: an exhibit floor packed with products
and services supporting the industry's needs, from cabin
entertainment to compliance; a dynamic, entertaining
series of presentations introducing the new products
presented at the show (see the article beginning on
page 54 for details); and nearly 100 hours of training
on installing and troubleshooting the latest and most
popular products, plus business management training and
professional development courses. You also could get the
latest regulatory updates impacting aviation businesses
at more than 250 shops from 14 different countries. Did I
mention free Aircraft Electronics Technician certification
and endorsement exams were available for convention
attendees?
But wait, as the sales pitch goes; there's more!
Convention-goers could snag a free lunch on the exhibit
hall floor, along with a free icebreaking reception,
the First-Nighter Event, which is always a don't-miss
party. In this case, the " more " also includes the almost
unending opportunities each AEA Convention affords
its attendees to meet and mingle with their peers. The
exhibit hall's free lunch and the First-Nighter Event exist
to facilitate that objective. It's professional networking
101, and there's no better place for avionics industry
participants to practice it.
Opening Session
Because the overall event also serves as the
association's annual meeting of its members, there's
business to conduct and information to be shared.
Among that information is the state of the association
and the industry it represents. Outgoing AEA Chairman
Garry Joyce delivered the convention's opening address,
saying, " I'm extremely thankful to each of you for the
trust you have given me and the support of this fine
