effort through. He departed March 31, about halfway
through his five-year term after leading the agency
through difficulties including the pandemic, the aftermath
of the Boeing 737 Max crashes and more recently the 5G
interference issue with radio altimeters.
The FAA hoped to produce a replacement fuel for
100LL with the PAFI initiative, but at the
moment there is no fleetwide approved
100-octane unleaded fuel available that
is demonstrated to work in all types of
piston aircraft. There are five candidate
fuels in development, according to Earl
Lawrence, who until recently served
as the executive director of the FAA's
Aircraft Certification Service. Two fuel
suppliers have developed a 100-octane
and one a 94-octane fuel under a oneby-one
supplemental type certificate
approval for a large number of individual
airframe/engine combinations. Whether
any of these 100-octane versions will
make it to fleetwide approval is yet to be seen.
What's different about the EAGLE initiative is that the
Baker on a March 2 webinar on EAGLE hosted by
AOPA's Tom Haines. (AOPA Live " Unleaded Aviation
Fuel Update " is available on YouTube.) Bunce and fuel
industry expert Paul Millner were also on the webinar.

The concept is if the FAA and all of
general aviation put their shoulders to
the wheel, things can move ahead more
rapidly than before. And the entire
industry has to be involved, because the
tenacles of the effort to qualify a new
fuel reach into all areas from engines
and airframes to propellers and refinery
operations and distribution.
The urgency of the situation
is underlined by a shift in the
environmental regulatory landscape.
FAA and GAMA and other general aviation groups are
setting a deadline for getting the job done by 2030. There
is a sense of urgency because the availability of 100LL
that piston aircraft now rely on has a fragile supply
chain, to say the least.
" We've got to do it now, " said AOPA President Mark
Environmental authorities in Europe have already
ruled that 100LL endangers human health, and in the
United States the Environmental Protection Agency will
probably follow suit next year.
