in the other country. The coordination will include ground
safety, environmental impacts, insurance and liability, mishap
and accident investigation, and oversight and enforcement.
FAA employs tool to reduce
launch-related airline delays, fuel burn
Commercial space launches in Florida are contributing
to airline delays and unnecessary fuel burn, but a recently
launched FAA traffic tool - the Space Data Integrator - allows
for airspace to be opened as soon as possible after a space
operation. The SDI improves the FAA's situational awareness
of precisely where a vehicle is as it travels to space or returns
to Earth. Early use of this tool and its predecessors show a
reduction in airspace closures from an average of more than
four hours per launch to about two hours.
Commercial Space Astronaut
Wings Program ends
The FAA ended the Commercial Space Astronaut Wings
Program in 2022, instead recognizing on the agency's website
anyone who is on an FAA-licensed or permitted launch that
reaches 50 statute miles above the surface of the Earth. Thirty
individuals received FAA Commercial Space Astronaut Wings
between the program's creation in 2004 and the program's end
in 2021.
First commercial airport launch site
The Huntsville International Airport recently became the
first commercial airport approved by the FAA as a reentry
site for commercial space vehicle landings. The approval is
initially limited to Dream Chaser, Sierra Nevada Corporation's
multimission space utility vehicle. The aircraft is designed
to transport crew and cargo to low-Earth orbit destinations,
including the International Space Station. NASA chose Dream
Chaser to provide cargo delivery, return, and disposal service
for the ISS.
Outlook strong:
$1 trillion annual revenue by 2040
According to Citigroup analysts, the commercial space
sector should reach $1 trillion in annual revenue by 2040
while enjoying a 95% decrease in launch costs. From 1970
to 2010, average launch costs were around $16,000 per
kilogram for heavy payloads and $30,000 per kilogram for
light payloads.
Average cost per kilogram is down to approximately $2,500,
which Citi said is largely the result of SpaceX's successful
launch of Falcon 9 in 2010. Falcon 9's launch costs are
approximately 30 times lower than NASA's space shuttle costs.
Citi noted in its report that the perception of space as a
" hobby for billionaires " presents a risk for growth, and the
industry needs to work toward wider public acceptance. q
