he aviation industry and the Federal Aviation
Administration are seeking to fill the aviation
technician pipeline in creative new ways, including
new or expanding apprenticeship programs, hiring and recruiting
bonuses, partnerships with technical colleges and other schools,
and educational grants.
Demand for aviation technicians is high with no end in sight.
Dave Davies, chief executive officer of Constant Aviation, an
MRO with bases in Cleveland, Ohio, and Orlando, Florida, said
for each technician the company hires, they could use another
three people.
The pandemic is partly to blame for the workforce shortage,
as companies initially let go or laid off employees, and not
all employees chose to return. Davies said some people have
decided not to return to full-time work, especially in multiincome
families, citing a shift in what people will accept and
what they want.
Constant Aviation recently announced a number of initiatives
to help develop its workforce.
The company partnered with Western Technical College in El
Paso, Texas, to provide students with an opportunity to get onthe-job
training and work toward their airframe and powerplant
certifications after completing programs at Western Tech. A
new partnership with Davis Aviation and Maritime High School

in Cleveland aims to educate young people about careers in
aviation.
The company also has a successful apprenticeship program
that pays individuals while they gain shop experience and also
covers the costs of all training, tools, and class work to obtain an
aviation maintenance technician certificate.
Constant Aviation already sees benefits of a partnership with
the National Hot Rod Association, through which it hopes to
attract people who are mechanically inclined and interested in
technical careers.
While the company seeks to develop new talent, Davies
realizes the need for experienced personnel.
" Everyone has a desire for experienced people, " Davies said.
" We're having such good success rate with internships and
apprenticeships, but we also need to make sure the hangars don't
get too young. "
That desire for experienced personnel led the company to
provide a $15,000 signing bonus for qualified military veterans.
This bonus has successfully led to an increase in senior
personnel.
A $2,000 signing bonus is available for other successful
technical position candidates and can escalate to $8,000 for
successful aircraft-on-ground technician candidates following
the completion of their first year with the company.
