to the turbine's fully automatic digital engine control, which
is programmed to prevent overstresses. Likewise, autothrottle
systems communicate directly with FADEC.
The average Lycoming or Continental piston powerplant
does not have FADEC, and overcoming the technical
challenges of automating the coordination of the throttle,
prop and mixture are not insurmountable, Stone said. " But
meeting these challenges comes at a cost and complexity, and
if someone spends the money, what do they get for it? "
The mechanical engineering challenges start with three
servos per engine and dealing with throttle friction or vernier
control linkages, according to Stone. If OEMs ever realize the
promise of piston FADEC, " it would manage the engine so you
don't get it over-square and things like that. " Newer products,
like the Cirrus with its single lever that controls the throttle and
prop mitigates some of the piston autothrottle challenges, " but
you still have to manage mixture. "
Autothrottle is an integral capability in Garmin's Emergency
Autoland system, which is certified on the turboprop powered
Piper M600 and a pair of TBMs as well as the turbofan Cirrus
SF50 (with more airplanes to come), Stone noted. Using it for
speed control was secondary to its necessary contribution to

the Autloland safety net that includes automated flaps, landing
gear, and brake operation.
While Autoland is a " use only in case of emergency "
system, pilots can employ its autothrottle capability on every
flight. " The autopilot mode control panel has a selection for
manual for FMS, " Stone explained. " In manual, you can bug
your speed, and autothrottle will maintain that speed, or you
can put in the FMS, where each flight plan leg can have an
assigned speed. " To activate autothrottle, " once you establish
a climb, you click the autopilot button, and autothrottle "
syncs with and maintains the bugged or FMS speed, and
FADEC keeps the engine within its limits, and it uses pitch to
address an underspeed.
Autoland leverages the existing aircraft sensors and adds
a few more. " To close the loop in the control system, we
also instrument the power levers so we know their position. "
Garmin's G3000 integrated flight deck is the " brain "
needed for Autoland. " Technically, retrofitting this system
is possible, " Stone said, adding that Garmin did exactly that
when it installed the system on company aircraft for testing
and certification. " The economics of such an effort is another
question. " Daher, Piper and Cirrus adopted Autoland as a
forward-fit installation in their production lines.
