third dimension, they are not visible. Understanding the concept of
wavelength is important, because wavelength determines antenna
size and where radio waves will fit.
For example, the wavelength for GPS is a little more than 200
centimeters. As a result, the antennas are small enough to fit within
a cellphone. On the other hand, the wavelength of a frequency at
the low end of the AM broadcast band is slightly less than 550
meters. This is why stations in the AM broadcast band are difficult
to receive inside a metal building.
Radio is an efficient form of communication. Radio frequencies
radiated with a power level of 1W or less have been used for
worldwide communication. It's amazing how a radio wave emitted
with such low power can induce voltage and current in an antenna
half a world away.
A relatively cheap and painless way to study for the RCS
endorsement is to study for an amateur radio license first. Usually,
courses are free or available for a nominal fee. These courses cover
all of the subject matter in these first two stories. The amateur radio
license tests are inexpensive to take and are good practice for the
RCS. As an additional benefit, you earn an amateur radio license.
Amateur radio is a hobby, which is perfect for avionics technicians.

The three ways radio waves travel (propagate). Space waves continue into space.
Ground waves follow the curvature of the Earth. Sky waves bend through the
ionosphere, returning to Earth at a distant location. Sky waves leave areas of no
reception known as gaps.
