" They've been eager and aggressive in how to find ways
to meet our needs, in particular, reducing the size, power, and
weight of the flat-panel antenna, " he said. " The terminal installation
volume we have today is about 11 inches wide, 24 inches
long, and only 2 inches high. And everything is in the terminal
- the electronically steerable antenna, two GPS antennas, the
modem, and the power conditioning unit.
" The only things that are outside of the unit are the 28-volt
DC power cable coming in and the Ethernet out to the Gogo
cabin router. It simplifies the installation and limits the number
of modifications to the airframe. "
Speaking of airframes, he explained that because of the antenna's
small size and light weight, Gogo Business Aviation
will be able to offer its global broadband on most business
aircraft, from large cabin turboprops and super light jets up to
ultra-long-range jets.
MacDougall said that after looking at all the possible LEO
satellite providers, Gogo chose OneWeb to provide the satellite
constellation for many reasons, with two of the biggest being the
maturity of its LEO constellation and the fact that Hughes already
supplies modems for OneWeb's network. The latter would
help minimize any system integration issues down the road.
" OneWeb is focused on creating a network for mobile applications, "
he said. " They understand the challenges and have developed
solutions for all of them. They are also business-to-business
oriented, which means they are focused on building a partner
network and supporting those partners as they enter the various
vertical markets. "
" Our agreement with Gogo Business Aviation represents
a leap forward for business aviation connectivity, " said Ben
Griffin, vice president of mobility at OneWeb. " By harnessing
the power of our LEO constellation to deliver robust, consistent
and reliable coverage, OneWeb and Gogo will be able to offer an
unmatched experience to business jet operators and passengers. "
" OneWeb is making great progress on its network, " MacDougall
said. " They already have two-thirds of their 648-satellite
constellation in orbit and will have full coverage by the
middle of 2023. "
It all fits
Of course, all the globe-hopping, high-speed capabilities aren't
much good if the hardware is difficult to install on business
turboprops and jets. MacDougall said they made discussions
with aircraft owners, MROs, and airframe OEMs part of the
development process to mitigate any such issues.
" We simply asked them what they needed from us to bring
this to business aviation, and they told us, " he said. " That
feedback was critical in helping us develop a system that will
deliver ground-breaking capabilities on most business aircraft.
" They also wanted the system to be easily integrated with
the Gogo LRUs that are currently in the field. The new LEO
broadband solution will plug straight into any of our current
AVANCE LRUs. All the owner/operator will need to do
after installing the broadband satcom terminal is go into the
AVANCE software menu and set up the global connectivity
solution. "
He explained that this unparalleled flexibility would enable
Gogo AVANCE customers to easily tailor their system's
services to their immediate needs, something that's not been
possible before.
" Customers can have the best of both worlds - ATG for domestic
flights and high-speed broadband for international trips, "
MacDougall said. " Or they can define the ATG for the crew, and
the passengers can connect via the satellite. Also, if they don't
want the ATG, they don't have to have it. They're free to configure
the solution that best fits their needs and budget. "
Promises made. Promises kept.
It's a safe bet that every cellphone customer is tired of their
provider promising one wireless experience (i.e., speed) and
delivering another. You know the " We may slow your network
speed at peak times " line.
While Gogo is the first to admit there are times when the
network's capacity is loaded, and things can slow down - it's just
a fact of our digital life - they're putting their proverbial money
where their network is.
" We have a service level agreement on every product we offer
today, and it will be the same for our global Satcom services, "
MacDougall said. " It's our written commitment to stand behind
our products and guarantee the level of performance you will
experience with our solution.
" There will be no crazy carve-outs for different times and
locations. If we say you're going to get a certain level of
performance, then that's what you'll get. If you don't, we're
going to fix it. "
MacDougall also stressed that Gogo Business Aviation is
promising to protect investments in any AVANCE products now
and well into the future.
" The AVANCE software is the foundation of our product
road map; everything is built around the software's ability to
grow and evolve as our customers' needs do, " he said. " We're
just at the very beginning of our global connectivity journey,
but we're doing what we can to make sure what we offer
today can grow as technology does.
" Five years ago, we didn't have the technologies to even
think of providing the kinds of experiences our ATG and
LEO networks can bring to an aircraft's cabin. From our
connectivity solutions to our in-flight entertainment product
like Gogo VISION, we are committed to continuing to
