f " necessity is the mother of invention, " then it's
not a stretch to believe that opportunity is the
father of innovation. Even in today's worldwide
parts shortage, finding opportunities to adapt to the
situation and meet changing needs has worked for PS
Engineering.
If you allow a touch of artistic license, that's how
PS Engineering came to be. Well, at least how its first
portable intercom was created.
Mark Scheuer, one of PS Engineering's founders, had
purchased a used Grumman
American AA-1A Trainer
to build hours. While the
spunky little Grumman
was great for a low-time
GA pilot, it had one major
drawback: Its cockpit was noisy.
" It had a sliding canopy, and even though it only had

108 horsepower, between the engine noise and wind, it
was loud, " he said. " I wanted an intercom, but back in
1984, there wasn't anything that suited my needs. "
So, he did what any electrical engineer would do given
a similar problem; he and a friend designed and built a
better product.
" We developed our first portable intercom that would
not only deliver better cockpit and ATC communications,
but it would also greatly reduce the amount of wiring in
the panel, " Scheuer said. " We introduced the aerocom
intercom in 1985. It was the first portable intercom with
individually gated microphones. "
As he explained it, by using individual VOX (voice
control) circuits for the pilot and co-pilot microphones,
not only was the frustration of clipping the first few
syllables eliminated, but the amount of background noise
was significantly reduced.
At the time, other intercoms on the market had all of
their microphone inputs open when anyone would speak,
which allowed them to pick up all the ambient cockpit
noises. Scheuer found that distracting.
" We also put all of the jacks, wires and connectors
on the back of the aerocom
unit, " Scheuer said. " Just
two years (1987) after it
was introduced, Aviation
Consumer magazine rated
the aerocom 'Golden' in the
spaghetti factor (fewer wires to drape over pilots' legs),
and they also named it the 'Best Overall Intercom.' "
While he kept his day job as a technical sales
representative for Hewlett-Packard, Scheuer continued
to build PS Engineering. To get sales rolling, while the
fledgling company placed a small ad in Trade-A-Plane, he
quickly found the best way to show the product's benefits
was to travel to air shows and other industry events and
do live demonstrations to pilots. PS Engineering's first
retail location was the trunk of Scheuer's car.
Traveling to all the events also allowed him to hear
and respond to customer comments. In fact, the decision
