Multibeam: Multiple antenna beams on a satellite cover a
contiguous geographical area instead of a single wide-area beam.
Network Availability: This is a probabilistic measurement
of the length of time (reliability) that a system or
network is typically available. Five-nines (99.999%) is the
theoretical goal everyone strives toward.
Network Traffic Modeling: It is a theoretical modeling
process used to describe the dynamic behavior of a
network during various times of a typical day.
Megabytes per second (Mbps): Megabytes per
second generally refers to upload and download speeds.
Each byte is made up of 8 bits. A megabyte is made up of
1,000,000 bytes.
Megahertz (MHZ): It is used to measure frequency and
bandwidth. One MHz is equivalent to 1 million hertz, or 1
million cycles per second.
Parabolic Dish Antenna (satcom antenna): The
onboard antenna, usually mounted in a radome on the top of
the aircraft's tail, amplifies the analog signals from the modem,
converts them to radio waves, and then transmits them to and
receives them from the satellite.
Once the antenna establishes a two-way link with a GEO satellite,
a small motor tilts and swivels the antenna to keep the dish
aimed at that satellite or acquire a new signal when transitioning
between two satellite coverage areas.
Phased-Array Antenna: See electrically steerable antenna.
Radome: This weatherproof enclosure covers the aircraft's
weather radar (nose) and/or satcom (tail mount). The unit is
constructed of strong composite materials that can withstand
extreme weather and flight conditions yet is " transparent " to the
receiver/transmitter signals (see parabolic dish antenna).
