Quality of Service (QoS): This is how an internet service
provider prioritizes the routing of digital traffic through its network
based on the application type. For example, it may prioritize business-critical
applications like email and voice over general web
browsing or streaming music.
Satellite Communications (satcom): Airborne data
communication via a satellite is usually abbreviated to the term
satcom. The use of satellites for this purpose complements satellite-based
navigation capability. Aircraft onboard equipment for
satcom includes a satellite data unit, a high-power amplifier, and
an antenna with a steerable beam.
Shared Service: The internet service on the aircraft is a
shared service, meaning it must be fast enough to accommodate
multiple users, each using one or more devices. Sometimes, even
devices not in use will still use up internet bandwidth.
For example, a passenger may have inadvertently left an iPad
on but stored it in their luggage. When the device sees the Wi-Fi
connection in the cabin, it may try to update its software or upload
all the new photos to the cloud, consuming unnecessary bandwidth
that should be reserved for the passengers to use.
Spectrum: See licensed spectrum. This relates to the radio
frequencies allocated to the mobile communications providers and
other sectors over the airwaves.
VPN (Virtual Private Network): This is an encrypted
connection over the internet from a device to the network. It gives
you online privacy and anonymity by creating a network that is
not accessible via the public internet connection.
Wi-Fi Connection: Just like your home or office Wi-Fi,
it's how the passengers connect their devices to the in-cabin
router using the Wi-Fi. They'll need the name and password of
the Wi-Fi network to connect. Wi-Fi only provides a wireless
access connection between the router and a device like a tablet,
personal computer, or TV player like a Roku. It does not guarantee
they can access the internet, which requires all the other
parts to work. q
