MORE WAYS TO GROW YOUR OWN
The advantage of
his month's column covers the aviation workforce
and the advantages repair stations have when
employing technicians. The data noted is mostly
United States centric because it is readily available. However,
the basic premise of a labor shortage and the advantages of
repair station regulations are universal to all of the Aircraft
Electronics Association's global membership.
In our industry, we often have the following conversation:
There is a shortage of (1) personnel in general and (2)
trained and qualified individuals, specifically. This is not a
new topic, nor is it a conversation limited to aviation. We all
see advertisements for nearly every technical trade. In the
certification world of aviation, it seems to be much more
difficult. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics at BLS.
gov, there are only 151,400 aircraft and avionics maintenance
jobs, of which only 19,600 are avionics technicians.
There are two interesting statistics about the avionics
workforce. First, the three states with the highest
population of avionics technicians are, with no surprise,
Florida (2,020), California (1,740) and Texas (1,720).
The second informative statistic notes the list of states
with the highest concentration of avionics technician
jobs per thousand jobs statewide: Alaska (8.8/10,000),

To support the " grow your own " path and
the certification of qualified individuals,
the AEA has developed two clearly defined
options in cooperation with the FAA.
Kansas (4.9/10,000) and Alabama (4.4/10,000). Of the 40
states that report avionics technician data, four employ
fewer than 40 avionics technicians statewide: Arkansas,
Minnesota, New Mexico and North Dakota. There are 10
states that don't report avionics data at all.
The point is that even in the most active state for avionics
technician employment (Florida), for every 10,000 jobs
statewide, there are only two avionics technician jobs.
When we overlay the industry segments that employ
avionics technicians, we continue to identify the
challenges we face. A third of the avionics technician jobs
are in the support of air transportation (repair stations,
FBOs, etc.); a third work in aerospace manufacturing;
