Look before you leap
Ingram continued to hone his business leadership skills when he joined
Honeywell Aerospace's Avionics Business Unit as vice president and
general manager. He led the cockpit systems division, which accounted for
some $1.4 billion in business for the company.
Today, Ingram leads Shadin Avionics and Electronic Concepts &
Engineering of Holland, Ohio, while also serving as CEO of Maverick,
the private-equity holding company that acquired the two companies in
2020 and 2021. He has spent the better part of a year learning about the
companies' products and the customers who use them.
" You have to understand your products and where they fit into each
customer's supply chain and overall ecosystem, " he said. " The first part of
coming on board was all about that, and once I had a good understanding,
it was time to make sure what our customers understood about Shadin
Avionics and ECE matched what I had learned.
" I found it was mostly accurate. Some people think, for example, Shadin

is an engine trend monitoring company. Others think of it as a fuel flow or
data conversion company. They're all right, but they don't know about the
other things that Shadin Avionics does. Same with ECE. Certain customers
know us as an embedded hardware provider, while others know us as a
FADEC provider. Getting out there and explaining what we can do for
customers is really important and a fun part of the job for me. "
During his research, Ingram found ECE to be a " very good development
company with massive years of experience when it comes to closed
loop designs - an engine FADEC that controls an engine or an actuator
controller that controls flight controls or a brake control that controls the
antiskid on the braking system. But they don't have as much certification
experience, whereas Shadin Avionics has some simpler products, but a
deep, deep understanding and pedigree of certifying products. "
Developing new products
Translating Shadin's expertise into new products is at the top of Ingram's
to-do list. Still, he's careful not to jeopardize the company's stability.
" It's the innovator's dilemma, " he said. " You have to continue to invest
in your existing business to make it more efficient and help it grow while
figuring out a way to invest in and innovate new products. Aviation
companies come and go. For example, at Avidyne, I was the lead systems
engineer on the Eclipse program. As you may recall, that company was sold
into bankruptcy after investing over a billion dollars in a very light jet.
" Thinking about the future of aviation, we're at an interesting inflection
point, especially with electric aviation and advanced air mobility. Suppliers
like Shadin Avionics have to be careful about spending time designing
products for a new OEM or market. If it goes away, what are you left with?
So, although I'm super excited about the advanced air mobility space, I
think we're going to let it mature a little bit before we invest in it. But,
we're definitely keeping our eye on other opportunities. " q
