"Still today, I feel as if I'm not 15 minutes early to a meeting, I am late, just
like our football meetings," he said. "I also learned to have an unstoppable attitude from football. I was always the smallest person on the football field, so I
had to use better technique, more intellect, and a bigger heart to compete at that
level."
While playing for the Wildcats was the highlight of Williams's college experience, he enjoyed every aspect of his time at Baker. During his senior year,
Williams served as a marketing intern for Baker's School of Professional and
Graduate Studies. He was a jack-of-all-trades, highlighting students and professors through social media, covering events, distributing content on various digital
platforms, and building an online presence. It was an eye-opening experience,
and he learned where his entrepreneurial spirit could take him. He realized that
many small-business owners don't have the time to create a digital marketing
strategy.
"After my internship with Baker SPGS, I saw a need for digital marketing services for small businesses and nonprofits," Williams said.
After graduating in May 2016, Williams wasted no time. In June, he founded Evolving Digital Media, a marketing agency that provides online and offline
marketing services for small businesses and nonprofits. Today, Evolving Digital
Media has two offices in Kansas City, one in the Westport area and the other in
the Historic 18th and Vine District.
Starting a business can be scary, but Williams turned to Baker's alumni network to get started. Phil Hannon, '86, assistant director of special gifts and former head baseball coach, founded the Keepers of the Legends Foundation. The
organization works to educate young people about the history and values behind
baseball, while simultaneously teaching important life lessons. Williams knew
Evolving Digital Media could help Keepers of the Legends grow nationwide.
"We created a pipeline for baseball equipment from baseball academies to less
fortunate kids and donated thousands of pieces of equipment around the world,"
Williams said. "We raised thousands of dollars through social media marketing."
Keepers of the Legends grew substantially, and so did Williams' confidence in
his entrepreneurial abilities.
"Working with Keepers of the Legends gave me the confidence that my business can help any business in any industry," Williams said. "I am honored that
Mr. Hannon put his brand in the care of my business."
Word got around about Evolving Digital Media's approach to marketing, and
Williams' business flourished. Its services expanded to include drone photography. The company boasts drone shots of the Plaza Lighting Ceremony and
Arrowhead Stadium and has used this technology for a variety of customers
including Oddessy Martial Arts Supply, Your Beauty Supply, and Niecie's
Restaurant.
While leading a successful company might intimidate some, Williams is forging ahead. He plans to expand to more states, work with more businesses, and
get more young people involved.
"Now, three years and 75 clients later, I love what I do every day and wouldn't
give it up for anything."
Most important, he is thankful for his time as a Baker Wildcat.
"My degree has given me immense opportunities," Williams said. "Without
my internship, I probably would never have started a business in the industry
that I am in now. Connections, resources, and advice are all things that I still
receive from Baker, even after I have graduated and moved on. Baker helped me
accomplish my dream."
