2018 marked the second year of popcorn research that focused on the accuracy of the stand
reduction portion of current loss procedures. The
research studied stand reduction was applied at
three stages of growth: 5-leaf, 10-leaf, and 15-leaf
with levels of defoliation at 0, 25, 50 and 75 percent stand reduction. Differences in yield were
measured between the expected loss from the
current charts and the actual measured loss and
the results are shown in Table 7.

Research to evaluate plant damage effects
on peanut production began in 2018 in Tifton,
Georgia. Researchers applied treatments of 33,
66, and 99 percent plant damage to field-grown
peanuts at 30, 60, 90, and 120 days after planting. These timings encompass a broad range of
growth stages from early vegetative to near maturity. Data suggest that loss percentage increases with increasing plant damage and days after
planting (Table 6).

Arkansas has historically grown more determinant soybean, but recently there has been
a trend to start growing an earlier maturing indeterminant variety. This trial began in 2016 to
study the impact of simulated hail defoliation
on the yield and percent loss of soybean at the
R-4 and R-5 stages of development. This is a
follow-up to the studies that showed large losses from defoliation at R-1 and R-3. Two different varieties were used-MG 4.7 indeterminant
and MG 5.4 determinant variety were planted
at Newport, Arkansas. Defoliation was applied
at 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 percent at either the R-4
or R-5 stage of growth. Losses were significantly greater for the indeterminant MG 4.7 variety
at the higher levels of damage than current R-4
charts indicate (Table 8), while losses at R-5 were
close to what the charts indicate. The research on
the determinant MG 5.4 variety showed that the
current charts are still applicable to the varieties
being grown today. (Table 9).
