Jared Smith

Jared Smith is the eight-generation farming his family's land
in Mayport, Pennsylvania. He wants to pass it to his children.
"I think it gives them a good work ethic; a sense of responsibility they won't learn in other places.
Jared uses crop insurance to stay in business, to hopefully
pass the family farm on to the next generation.
"The margins in agriculture are so slim right now that I feel
crop insurance gives you a level of security that you are going to
have some income off the investment you are making into your
crops," he says.
Jarred relied on crop insurance in 2018, saying it started out
very wet but then from June 10 to August 25 the area only received five inches of rain.
But on August 25, torrential rains began and the rest of the
fall was a battle to get crops harvested.
"We left hay standing in the fields because we couldn't get
in to harvest it."
Jarred has been using the Pasture, Rangeland, Forage crop
insurance product for 10 years.
"It gave us some extra income last year, and a few summers
ago when it was really dry. There are so many risks with Mother
Nature, at least with crop insurance, you've got a guarantee of
what you can get back if you have a bad year."

Brian Campbell

Brian Campbell always knew he wanted to be a
farmer. He started a produce stand when he was just
14 years old. Now, his Pennsylvania farm produces
mostly vegetables, including broccoli, sweet corn,
lettuce, and pumpkins.
But weather can be unpredictable in the Northeast, and his farm has seen challenges. In 2011, a
severe flood wiped out approximately 50 percent of
his expected revenue for that year. Banks no longer
wanted to do business with him and he had to dig
deep to recover.
Thankfully, the introduction of the Whole Farm
Revenue Protection program with the passage of the
2014 Farm Bill allowed Campbell to adequately insure his diverse crops against risk.
Campbell credits crop insurance for his growing
success, saying, "If it wasn't for whole farm revenue
protection today, you know, I may not be at the size
that I am."
And he's always looking forward to the next year,
"I love what I do. It's a passion. I really enjoy it."
