The Minnesota Regional/
State Committee held its
annual loss adjuster schools
in late July at the Southwest
Research and Outreach
Center in Lamberton. New
adjusters attended the first
day where they were given
hands-on opportunities
to adjust losses on wheat,
soybean, dry beans, and
corn. Crop plots had both the
vegetative and reproductive
stages for all three crops. The
next day, more experienced
adjusters joined the group
and training focused on
those same crops.
The first day of the Crop-Hail and MPCI School and Field
Day in Manhattan, KS, was spent in the field studying
MPCI appraisal methods for corn, grain sorghum,
and soybean. That afternoon, adjusters assessed hail
damaged corn, grain sorghum, and plots and used the
NCIS loss adjustment handbooks to determine losses.
The second day began with a review of the field plot
results and a brief review of crop procedures.
More than 100 loss adjusters
attended the Crop-Hail and
MPCI Cotton School and Field
Day on September 24 in Altus,
OK. The classroom session
included a review of the CropHail cotton loss procedures
and a presentation on cotton
plant issues. During the field
day, adjusters worked through
stations considering losses
from plant cutoffs, limb loss,
lock damage, boll damage,
appraisal methods for stand
reduction and boll count.

Two loss adjuster schools were held in Fargo, North Dakota, in early August. The first day
was just for new adjusters, with more experienced adjusters joining them the second day.
The schools were held at North Dakota State University where, during their field training,
attendees adjusted losses on barley, chickpeas, corn, dry bean, lentils, soybean, and wheat.
Two newer crops, faba beans and industrial hemp, were also included in the discussions.
The success of the NCIS schools and fields
days comes from the NCIS liaisons and regional/state committees who are responsible
for planning and hosting the events, as well as
ensuring that each school is relevant for the
adjusters who attend. These individuals also
identify experienced plot leaders who have the
skills necessary to effectively instruct attendees
at the field days.
Each year the schools continue to grow as
they ensure that all adjusters are adequately and
accurately trained on industry approved loss procedures. NCIS would like to thank the individual
regional/state committees, school chairmen, the
more than 150 plot leaders who served, and all of
those who helped plan or participate in teaching
at the 2019 schools and field days. They would
not be as successful without your help.
