Insurance

Fourth-generation farmer, Sarah Lott Zost, and
her father run Bonnie Brae Fruit Farms' 700 acres
of orchards located near Gardners, Pennsylvania,
about 75 miles northwest of Baltimore, MD. Her
great-grandfather planted his first apple tree in 1927
and the family has been growing fruit on that land
ever since.
" I grew up working on the farm every summer, " Zost said. " Sometimes I
hated it. Sometimes it was great. "
Sarah said she realized the jobs her dad was doing were actually a lot
more interesting than the day to day work she was doing so she decided to
attend Michigan State University to study agribusiness management and
horticulture so she could eventually return to the farm full time, which she
did in 2013.
" I enjoy the opportunities I have to do a lot of cool things I wouldn't get
to do living somewhere else, " Sarah said. " I like being outside a lot, getting to
like work on irrigation systems, digging ditches, and gluing pipes together.
That kind of stuff. "
Sarah's dad is still involved with their fruit farm and she said he likely
will be for a long time yet. But Sarah is responsible for most of the logistics
of running the farm now, which includes keeping the field crews and sprayers
working, and during harvest, handling quality control.
" I'm also in charge of payroll, and all of our inspections, " Sarah said.
In the spring of 2020, the Bonnie Brae Fruit Farm apple and peach trees
suffered freeze damage twice during a very long bloom.
Apple harvest begins on the Bonnie Brae Fruit Farm.
