Every year, National Crop Insurance Services (NCIS) hosts loss adjuster
schools and field days all over the country with a mission to educate new and experienced
adjusters alike. Due to COVID-19, in-person schools have not taken
place since 2019, so everyone was very excited to welcome these back in 2022.
Many schools start with classroom training, which is followed by hands-on
field training where adjusters can learn or revisit current standardized procedures
to prepare themselves for successfully completing loss appraisals in the
future. This year, NCIS held 13 schools in 10 states with almost 800 adjusters,
supervisors, and trainers in attendance. Crops covered include wheat, corn,
soybeans, sunflowers, dry edible beans, apples, cherries, grapes, stone fruit,
canola, dry peas, flax, safflower, barley, forage, cotton, and peanuts.

Field Training
The field day for the Crop-Hail and Mulitple Peril Crop Insurance (MPCI)
Wheat School was held at the North Central Research Station near Lahoma,
Oklahoma, in mid-May. Participants had training on the current MPCI Small
Grains Loss Adjustment Standards Handbook and Crop-Hail wheat loss instructions.
Classroom instruction included sessions focusing on wheat loss
adjustment procedures and reviewing double crop practice and second crop
procedures. (See Enid 1.)
Adjusters at the Oklahoma school also participated in field work, determining
losses on hail damaged wheat, appraising production to count, and
measuring structures to determine production. (See Enid 2.)

Missouri 2
Participants at the Missouri school laid down a tape measure to determine
10 feet of row to assess damage as part of the soybean loss adjustment
procedures. (See Missouri 2.)
Adjusters closely studied the growth of soybeans at the Bradford Research
Center in Columbia, Missouri, school and field day that focused on
wheat, soybean, and corn loss adjustment procedures. (See Missouri 1.)
Adjusters who gathered in Richland, Washington, for the MPCI school
participated in field exercises and listened to plot leaders for instructions
on how to assess damage. Crops covered at this school included apples,
cherries, grapes, and stone fruit. (See Washington 1.)
