ASA DIRECTOR'S REPORT
The ASA Annual Meeting

his past October,

poster sessions from which an attendee is unfortunately
required to select a single option.
For most anesthesiologists, the surfeit of science and
education alone is akin to drinking from a fire hose. But,
for those of us involved in the governance of our state and
national societies, the six days can be downright daunting.
Advancing the Perioperative
Surgical Home
From a policy perspective, the most noteworthy issue
was the House of Delegates' decision to commit several
hundred thousand dollars over the course of the next three
years to advance the concept of the Perioperative Surgical
Home (PSH). To be clear, the ASA is not investing those
funds in individual programs to underwrite development
of a PSH, nor is it developing the PSH itself. Rather, the
ASA intends to help cover the costs of certain aspects of
nationwide PSH development, including the creation of a

learning collaborative, convening an annual stakeholder
summit beginning in 2014 and hiring specified staff for
the development of the PSH, including a project manager,
methodologists and a grant writer.
