pharmacokinetics. He collaborated with Ross Terrell,
the brilliant chemist at Ohio Medical Products who
invented all modern inhaled anesthetics. Through
his relationship with Ohio Medical, Ted played a
significant role introducing enflurane, isoflurane,
and desflurane into anesthesia practice by designing
and carrying out preclinical and clinical studies to
satisfy FDA requirements prior to FDA approval.
In addition, although Ted identified sevoflurane
as a promising anesthetic, he was concerned about
sevoflurane's chemical stability and so he discouraged
Ohio Medical from developing sevoflurane. They sold
the rights to another company. Ted was right that
sevoflurane lacked desflurane's chemical stability but
his misgivings proved incorrect. Sevoflurane's lack of
stability is clinically inconsequential.
While Ted's nearly 600 publications attest to his
personal research productivity, by some measures it is
the record of accomplishment of the students that best
reflects the importance of the mentor. Ted's co-authors
published (at last count) more than 1,600 papers. His
trainees and coauthors include four ASA Excellence in
Research awardees, four ASA Distinguished Service
awardees, two Editors-in-Chief of Anesthesiology, two
Editors-in-Chief of Anesthesia and Analgesia, more
than 20 Chairs of Anesthesiology Departments, two
Chairs of Departments of Veterinary Anesthesia, and
9 Directors of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Ted is one of only two anesthesiologists-the other
being Jack Michenfelder- to be awarded both the
Excellence in Research (EIR) and Distinguished
Service Awards (DSA) from the American Society of
Anesthesiologists.
Nearing the end of his research career, Ted, Rod
Westhorpe, and I embarked upon an effort to describe
the history of our specialty. We engaged more than
100 notable authorities throughout the world whose
contributions shaped the specialty as we now know
it. After more than six years the result, "The Wondrous
Story of Anesthesia," was published in 2014. Ted started
work on an autobiography two years ago, enlisting
Steve Shafer as his editor. His autobiography recounts

his transition from being a mediocre high school
student to a rigorous clinician and scientist, while
becoming a loving husband, a devoted parent, an
enthusiastic outdoorsman, a whimsical poet, and even
a talented singer.

How does one measure the impact of a person whose
work and influence has affected the lives of so many
students, trainees, residents, co-investigators, and
practitioners of this specialty of which we are all a
part? While research papers, awards, grants, and
citations are important, they ignore the personal
memories and shared experiences influencing the lives
of those remaining behind. In my case, nearly every
day prompts recall of an experience with Ted during
the 55 years we were both academic colleagues and
personal friends and it is impossible to imagine our
specialty without an appreciation of how anesthesia
today have been shaped by Ted's contributions.
