participants! The goal was to allow family members of
anesthesiologists to better understand what occurs in
the day in the life of an anesthesiologist. Using parts
of the perioperative area at Lucile Packard Children's
Hospital, family members rotated through multiple
simulation stations, with one track for children under
13 and another track for older children and adults.
The simulation stations included airway intubation
and anesthesia machines, vascular access and regional
anesthesia, and obstetric anesthesia procedures. There
was a virtual reality station to demonstrate how this
technology is used by our anesthesiologists to improve
patient care.

Anesthesia Diversity Council
The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and
Pain Medicine values diversity. The Anesthesiology
Diversity Council (ADC) was formed in 2016. Initially
the ADC included a few ambitious residents and faculty
with a vision, and has since expanded to now include
faculty, fellows, residents, and interns throughout
the department. The goal of the ADC is to create a
functional unit that will identify and cultivate the
skills necessary to foster diversity, provide mentorship,
create scholarly opportunities, and prepare Stanford's
anesthesiologists to address the health needs of a
diverse population.

Update on the Combined Anesthesiology
and Internal Medicine residency program
The Stanford combined anesthesia and internal
medicine residency program is one of five unique
training programs in the country. Our residents are
fully integrated into both departments and have
received recognition and awards for their excellent
clinical performance, medical student teaching, and
peer support. The residents have faculty mentors in
both departments and engage in scholarly research,
global health opportunities, and medical education
development.
We continue to recruit residents who will use their dual
training to become physician leaders and innovators.
In 2019, we had three graduates of the program, and
they each will be pursuing anesthesia fellowships: Amy
Kloosterboer, MD, in Critical Care Medicine, Jason
Leong, MD, in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Critical
Care Medicine, and Jai Madhok, MD, in Cardiothoracic
Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine.

Visiting Professor Quinn Capers, MD, and the Anesthesia Diversity
Council members

When asked about his residency training, Dr. Jason
Leong said, "Mastering two specialties took dedication and
hard work. While clinically rigorous, training at Stanford
is set in a non-intimidating supportive environment, which
made each of my years here rewarding and enjoyable.
The strength of each individual program worked
