partnership, anesthesiology residents and faculty have visited classrooms, providing hands-on experience on a variety of topics including point-ofcare ultrasound and airway management. The high school students have also visited the UCLA Simulation Center for an immersive learning experience. Post-pandemic Efforts These engagements came to a halt in the spring of 2020 when hospitals became overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients and schools were forced to close their doors. By the start of 2021, many people learned to adapt to a new normal, and resuming this important engagement with the community was a priority for all members of the partnership. With a desire to maintain the mission to provide mentorship and role-modeling for these young aspiring scientists, Dr. Sophia Poorsattar, the UCLA PLTW Partnership Program Director and CSA Foundation for Education Board Member, worked with the high school PLTW faculty to look for innovative approaches to resuming the program at a distance. The first set of virtual visits in the winter of 2021 focused first on the various pathways to careers in medicine and what it is like to work as an anesthesiologist. This was paired with a problembased learning discussion on airway assessment and management utilizing pre-recorded videos and live virtual demonstrations, a collaboration by several UCLA anesthesiology faculty and residents. At El Segundo High School, UCLA anesthesiology department members led this virtual program with an audience of nearly 80 students as well as districtwide Drs. Colby Tanner and Aanchal Prakash demonstrate airway techniques to students at El Segundo High School. Annual Publication 2021 | 73
