With the overwhelming success of the winter visits,
the next set of virtual visits took place in the summer
of 2021 with a focus on cardiac physiology and
preoperative cardiac evaluations. Students were
challenged to apply concepts they learned in their
human body systems courses to real-world clinical
scenarios, such as the assessment and significance
of functional capacity or the implications of various
cardiovascular pathologies on anesthetic management.
With the new academic year, the fall of 2021 marked
the rejoining of the Girls Academic Leadership Academy
to the partnership with virtual visits performed at each
of the three local high schools. With these visits, a new
set of approximately 150 students across the three
schools was able to establish meaningful mentoring
relationships and explore their interest in careers in
medicine. Select student feedback from these most
recent visits include:
" This made me extremely inspired to pursue my dream
career in the field of medicine or science. And without
you, not only would we not be as informed about
anesthesiology, but many people rely on you to be their
hero during a surgery, which is incredible. "
" The inclusion of different point of views from different
anesthesiologists let me see this career in different
ways and informed me of the importance of dedication
and passion in careers in medicine. I loved learning
about your lives and the ways in which to become an
anesthesiologist, focusing on the fact that there is not
only one correct path to become an anesthesiologist. "
Throughout this time of change, UCLA and CSA look
forward to maintaining their engagement with each
school's biomedical pathway program and adapting
their outreach strategies to meet the need. With the
