hoc task force to create the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Committee. Odi Ehie, MD, FASA, Associate Clinical
Professor at UCSF Department of Anesthesiology,
was appointed to chair the task force and conducted
the inaugural meeting on August 13, 2020. She would
be later appointed as Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity,
and Inclusion at UCSF Department of Anesthesia and
Perioperative Care. Under her leadership, the Interim
House of Delegates on November 21, 2020, would
establish CSA's Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
(JEDI) Committee.
Since its inception, the JEDI Committee has empowered
its members to be health equity leaders. In partnership
with CSA Educational Programs Division (EPD) led
by Richard Applegate, MD, FASA, and the Women in
Anesthesia Task Force led by Sydney Thompson, MD,
FASA, the JEDI Committee developed the first CSA
CME-accredited webinar session that was composed of
five panelists featuring the main topic " Why Mentorship
and Sponsorship Matter " and was moderated by Dr.
Thompson and Dr. Ehie in February 2021. The five
panelists were Dr. Renee Navarro from UCSF, Dr. Harriet
Hopf from University of Utah, Dr. Antonio Conte from
Kaiser, Dr. Jennifer Lee-Summers from Johns Hopkins,
and Me (Dr. Felipe Perez) from Stanford. CSA also
sponsored the viewing of Black Men in White Coats,
and hosted a webinar moderated by Dr. Calvin Johnson
of Cedars Sinai with other panelists. This webinar
highlighted the importance of pipeline programs and
further sparked discussion on ways to address disparities
in representation within medicine.
The JEDI Committee continues to grow and support
CSA members in recognizing how its members can be
health equity leaders. Dr. Ehie published an article in ASA
Monitor entitled " What is the Role for Anesthesiologists
and Anesthesia Practice in Ensuring Access, Equity,
Diversity, and Inclusion. " 1 Our CSA JEDI Committee
chair shares in the article the health disparities that
exist in pain management, obstetric anesthesia, and
pediatric anesthesia.
" Infant mortality is twice as high in the Black
community compared to the national average "
The article outlines a multi-pronged approached to
eliminate health inequities by anesthesiologists:
1. Promote a diverse workforce
2. Deliver patient-centered care
3.
Implement multidisciplinary management
perioperatively
4. Implement patient education programs
5. Provide cultural competency and diversity training to
providers and employees
6. Support research on social determinants of health
and perioperative outcomes
7. Educating residents and practicing anesthesiologists
on health policy to be able to advocate for patients
The article concludes by stating that " we should not only
care about health equity because it is the right thing to
do, we must care about health equity because failing to
do so hurts our patients as well as our profession. "
The benefits of incorporating diversity efforts in the
workplace is well established. Diverse teams make better
business decisions up to 87% of the time.2 Diversity
fosters innovation.3 Teams with diverse leadership
are 25% more likely to experience above-average
profitability.4 If able to achieve a sense of belonging then
it can result in employees having a 56% increase in job
performance, 50% drop in turnover, and 75% reduction
in sick days.5 If anesthesiology practices want to stay
competitive in this healthcare market, it is important they
include strategies to incorporate diversity and inclusion
into their practice models.
As a result of the JEDI Committee's efforts, CSA is
providing the tools and skillset for its members to
be positioned to bring value to their hospitals and
healthcare organizations. Thanks to CSA's foresight, our
physician anesthesiologists are prepared to be the health
equity leaders that society needs us to be to reduce the
health disparities that afflict our patients.
