Remembering Shirley Temple... by Tonya Bervaldi-Camaratta O The first Shirley Temple dolls that were released wore a coin dotted dress similar to the one that Shirley wore in the movie Stand Up and Cheer. This 16-inch Shirley Temple Cheer doll was only marked COP IDEAL NOVELTY AND TOY CORPORATION N&TCo. on the back of her head. 12 SUMMER 2014 n February 10, 2014, the most beloved child star in film history passed away. For many, it was the end of an era. Yet, Shirley Temple, with her spunk, dimpled smile, fifty-six curls and sunny optimism will continue to live on in the hearts of many for generations to come. Shirley Jane Temple was born on April 23, 1928 at the cusp of the Great Depression. Soon the world economy would be in a tailspin and more than 25-percent of the workforce in the United States would end up unemployed. Under these circumstances, people wanted nothing more than to forget their troubles. What better way to escape than to go to the movies? For a few hours one could be immersed in a world of laughter, song and dance. By 1931 Shirley Temple was enrolled in Meglin's Dance Studio. It was there that she was spotted by a film producer. Drawn to her chubby cheeks, dimples and spunky grin, he hired her for his series of short films. Although the Baby Burlesk films were not the most appropriate roles for a three year old, these films did help to supplement the Temple family income. Shirley sparkled on film and soon appeared in other short films including Dora's Dunkin Donuts, Merrily Yours, and Pardon my Pups. These short films were usually shown before the main attraction as a way to entertain an audience as they were coming into the theater.
