Reviewing Resources BAPS Doll and Puppets The History and Study of the German BAPS Dolls and Puppets by Nancy C. Felix-Moore N ancy C. Felix-Moore's book, BAPS Dolls and Puppets - The History and Study of the German BAPS Dolls and Puppets, is a wonderful soft-cover book about the history of the BAPS doll company and the entrepreneurship of the ladies who created it. Readers will learn that the book is more than just a story about toys; it is a story about the creativity and determination that sprung out of hardship and the need for survival. Nancy begins with a little history. She explains that after World War II parts of Germany were occupied by Americans. Times were very hard and many German civilians were left with nothing but their talents in order to survive. Hilde Bartel and Edith von Arps-Aubert founded the BAPS doll company in 1946 out of desperation during those post-war times. The women had an idea to make small dolls and puppets out of scraps of cloth (for which they begged) and market them to the Americans stationed in Germany. Their plan was successful and they gradually built up a company using finer fabrics and employing over one-hundred workers. Nancy has divided the book into four parts that include the history of the company, the puppets and theaters, the dolls and similar looking BAPS dolls. Each chapter provides detailed information about every item that was made and its variation. Nancy includes over two-hundred colorful photographs and over forty different types of figures. There is also information on the different regions of ethnic dolls and the origins of nursery rhymes and poems. Collectors will have an opportunity to view similar dolls, other items made by the BAPS company as well as photographs of the deconstruction of one unfortunate headless wolf doll. BAPS Dolls and Puppets is written in first person and is the most complete source on the subject to date. The book will make a nice addition to any collector's library. This book is self-published by Nancy C. Felix-Moore. Nancy C. Felix-Moore P.O. Author, Denise Buese, has masterfully woven her research into an intriguing story about the doll's history, the era in which she lived and the life of the family who bought her during the late 1800s. Readers will learn about Miss Carrie Louise Schiff, the doll's original owner, the unorthodox decisions of her mother -- Carrie Scates, and Carrie Louise's life as the mature Lady Alexander of Faversham in Kent, England. Beneath the surface of the provenance, readers will discover astonishing secrets of love, scandal, societal pressures and good deeds that would rival any modernday soap opera. Denise creatively includes original documents, photographs, paintings and drawings to give readers a visual image of the family, the culture and the fashion during Victorian times. Collectors will be enthralled by the incredible photographs of Victoria's exquisite trousseau, including her breathtaking gowns and accessories, all in the exuberant style of the 1870s. Readers will learn that Victoria, herself, is a rarity in the world of antique dolls because of her seldom found leather-blown body by French doll manufacturer Pierre Vincent Clement. Whether you are an expert or novice on antique French fashion dolls, this book is a lovely story to own and to enjoy.
