Doll News Fall 2014 - (Page 2)
From the Editor
A
s the weather grows cooler
and the leaves begin to drift
down from the trees, our
thoughts turn to the holidays -- Halloween,
Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas,
Kwanzaa, and with them, comes the promise of a New Year.
This issue of Doll News celebrates a variety of dolls, events and
people. We will look back at highlights from this past summer's
convention, Shared Passions, held in San Antonio, Texas. Mother
and daughter, Janet and Kairi Wolf share the fun they had at Fiesta,
the Junior Collector Round-Up. Jill Kaar Hanson leads us on a Stroll
through the Woods where we revisit in depth one of our special
exhibits. Highlights will continue through our winter and spring
issues with comprehensive coverage of the ever-popular competitive
exhibits and other outstanding special exhibits that made this
convention such a success.
For this issue's cover story, Julie Blewis draws us in to learn about
an impressive array of rare and beautiful black bisque dolls. Kathy
Monier's accompanying paper doll, Gabriela Rose, is an artistic
delight. Rebekah RA Kaufman introduces us to Bob, a little known
Steiff doll. Ann Leis pays a touching tribute to the life and legacy of
paper doll artist Tom Tierney. We are grateful to Tom's niece, Kathy
O'Tierney, who gave Doll News the honor of sharing a never-beforepublished holiday-themed paper doll set with our readers.
Dian Zillner invites us home to the charms of late-nineteenth
and early-twentieth century lithographed doll houses and their
furnishings. Home truly is where the heart is, and we are reminded
of this enduring belief through the pages of Marion Buschbom's
magical account of how the fairy tale cottages of Carmel came
to be. Lynn Nalven reacquaints us with an important early doll
researcher and former editor of Doll News magazine, UFDC charter
member -- Janet Johl.
AnneLise Wilhelmsen treats us to creative Mix and Match
designs for the Sasha doll, and Gael Shults weaves a special story
about a fashion dilemma - resolved! Nicki Burley serves lunch
stirred in with a little corporate history at the American Girl Place
in Los Angeles. Throughout the pages of this issue we visit the west
coast, the east coast and even Montana, but in the end we realize
there really is no place like home - especially for the holidays. May
yours be merry and bright!
