tammy The Doll You Love to Dress by Judith Izen I Introduced in 1962, Tammy came with several hair color choices. This platinum haired doll is in her original blue and white playsuit and sneakers with the original box. 98 SUMMER 2015 n the early 1960s the Ideal Toy Company mounted an incredible publicity and television advertising campaign introducing their teenage fashion doll Tammy to compete with Mattel's Barbie the reigning fashion doll. Introduced on television in 1962, Tammy was advertised heavily on CBS network Saturday children's shows such as Roy Rogers Show, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Mighty Mouse Playhouse, and Rin Tin Tin. With relentless television advertising and publicity events, Ideal pushed for Tammy's acceptance with girls and their mothers. In contrast to high fashion, well-endowed Barbie, Tammy was a demure doll with more realistic teenage proportions. Tammy was advertised as a wholesome outdoor girl who loved to go to football games, tennis matches, swimming parties dressed in the prettiest teenage outfits. Ideal advertised in Playthings Magazine, the trade magazine to retailers, that Tammy's "wholesome sweet-sixteen figure" would win the approval of more mothers (than Barbie). The Tammy doll is 12 inches tall with a hard vinyl jointed body and legs with soft vinyl arms. Her soft vinyl head is jointed at the neck base and has painted side-glancing blue eyes. Tammy came with rooted short honey blonde, brown or platinum curly hair. She is easy to dress since her arms are somewhat flexible. She is marked, "IDEAL TOY CORP./BS-12." All of Tammy clothes are marked "Tammy" or "Tammy Family." Ideal came out with several versions of Tammy including a Posing version and a Grown-Up version. In the rush to compete with Barbie, Ideal gave Judy Alpert, Tammy's fashion designer, only two weeks to design twenty-four of her first year outfits before they were to be shown at the New York Toy Fair.
