Japonism movement in the early 1900s
created interest in Eastern theme subjects.
Even non-people objects became used as
half-dolls; most popular in this category
were animals, birds, and flowers.
A study of department store and gift
store catalogs of the era indicates that
half-dolls were included in the novelty
category of goods. So, it is not surprising
that today's collectors edge into related
genre including bathing beauty dolls, fullfigural trinket boxes which separate at the
waist for access to the hollow interior, and
even vases, figurines, lamps, clocks and
other objects suitable for a lady's dressing
table or the parlor vitrine.
It is not unreasonable to position the
half doll genre within the wider scope of
other fashionable dolls of the 1920s and
1930s, such as the salon or boudoir dolls,
that were never intended as child play,
and were largely designed as decorative
objects.
The heyday of German and French
half-doll production was from 1908 until
the second World War, although halfdolls continued to be produced to some
smaller extent for longer. For example,
the Hertwig firm of Germany continued
production until 1953 when they
were taken over by the East Germany
government. Too, post-WWII, Japanese
porcelain firms had begun production and
exportation of half dolls, albeit mostly of a
simplistic dime-store quality.
Along the way, the original purpose
of the tea-cozy lady became blurred.
After all, how many covers for teapots
could one home have? Whether the idea
originated with collectors themselves,
or whether the porcelain firms or
stores began to promote the notion, it
became popular to simply collect the
figurines themselves, placing them
on display on a lady's dressing table
amidst perfume bottles and brushes,
or in a dainty vitrine in the parlor. And
then, as usually happens, one thing
led to another. Why not also collect the
full-doll example of the same half-doll?

Popular themes were repeated with simple variations. The lady on the left
is of bisque with a sculpted head band and metallic cloth costume while
the lady on the right is of porcelain and has sculpted cap and costume,
including details of slippers and bracelet.
What treasures
could hide in the
bibelot box whose
lid is decorated by
a French porcelain
half doll which
appears as though a
woman seated in a
garden of flowers?
The rare piece,
11-inches long, is
an example of the
imaginative uses
to which half dolls
were put.
