were active in their community and taught others how to make their dolls,
continuing the doll's legacy through others.
Donated to the Old Salem Museum, was a sewing box, in which many
pattern pieces were discovered, including each body part, as well as a stencil
for the face painting. Bradley Justice and I had the honor of inspecting this
treasure at the Old Salem Museum. The box included the sisters' needles,
some sewing notions and other expected sewing ephemera. As we carefully
lifted the bottom tray, we discovered a small envelope. Inside, was a Maggie
Bessie head and torso that had been assembled, but not yet painted or stuffed.
Upon inspection, Bradley discovered their unique method for assembling the
head, including the afore-mentioned upper facial dart. The head is normally
three pieces (except for great big doll). The front piece was sewn to the side
of the back pieces. Then, the center back head piece seam and the center back
torso, were sewn in one seam, again, simplifying the construction process.
Another treasure was discovered in a small envelope during my Maggie
Bessie journey. Many years ago, I acquired the Catherine White estate
collection. On my last day of packing her dolls, I discovered a full and heavy
file cabinet. I was quickly running out of time and energy and found the
file cabinet unappealing. As I peered into the files, most were of modern
magazine-order dolls, porcelain reproductions and other similar dolls. At the
last possible moment, I decided to "dump" the files into my car
trunk. Later, as I finally began to read through the modern files,
I found a small envelope with Catherine's handwritten, "Maggie
Bessie" on the exterior. As I opened the envelope, a frail Maggie
Bessie dress fell out. It had been almost completely disassembled
to make a pattern for a replacement dress. This pattern piece
clearly shows the simple construction of the dress.
One of my latest acquisitions is a "great big" Maggie Bessie
doll with a wardrobe, trunk, paper dolls, an antique Moravian
