my ancestral owners' impressive collection
of sewing notions, originally acquired
from an old Parisienne dressmaker's shop,
surrounded by the old boxes and decaying
fabrics lying about. Random drawers were
filled with old buttons, still neatly attached
to their original cards and stamped with
words like Paris Mode. A drawer or two even
contained salesman samples of fancy lace
and trimmings attached to their original
cards as well.
Some may think of this as an antique
doll's dream come true being surrounded
by pretty trimmings and buttons, but I was
not thrilled to be left alone in this lonely
dark attic, mingling with old and forgotten
keepsakes. At one time I was a very refined,
well-dressed and coiffed, fashionable
eighteen-inch tall Parisian lady. How I ended
up here, no one knows.
As the collector made her way through
the dark confines, she looked down and
just happened to notice my slender leather
legs protruding from a pile of old
crates and boxes. The attic's thick
musty air could be cut with a
knife and I really didn't expect
she could tolerate it much longer.
She gave one gentle pull and I soon
found myself in her hands. No doubt
she had a fright when
she saw my face,
which looked like
I'd been in a fire,
covered in thick black
dust! Not to mention a
good part of my head
was missing from the
top of my eyelids
around to the back,
with nothing left to
say who I was. Yet, it
was clear to see that I was
a lady of French Fashion decent.
Oh, how my beautiful brown eyes
were wanting to shine again!
My visitor looked in and all around the
box I was lying in for any broken pieces of
my lovely bisque, but alas, all she found
were tattered pieces of my once elaborate
wardrobe. Among my very personal
