music "cool," at a time when Country and Western
music experienced a surge in popularity. Other

television show, Dallas, introduced in 1978, ushering
in a "Texas vibe" of big hair, big business and
country western music.
Popular culture was pushed to an interest in
rodeo, horseback riding, in which Barbie followed
suit. In 1980, Barbie made the scene as "Western
Barbie," dressed in a white shiny western-style
jumpsuit trimmed in silver and black. White
cowboy boots were made in white plastic with the
simulated Barbie name "stitched" on the side. The
feature of this doll was her "wink." By pressing a
panel on the doll's back, it caused a blue-shadowed
eyelid to move and "wink." The process of this
action was managed by Mattel engineer April
Marano, who was trouble-shooting the complicated
