or a certain segment of the population, Friday evenings meant
snuggling up in comfortable 'jammies,' in front of the TV and watching
Tina Berry sell dolls in the quiet of the night on "Home Shopping
Network." It was always fun to see how many dolls would sell at such
a fast pace, courtesy of a tiny clock at the bottom right of the screen - rather
mesmerizing, in fact. None sold faster or were more beloved than the beautiful
porcelain creations of Australian Doll Artist, Kaye Wiggs. All children dolls
and quite large (over 25-inches tall), they uniquely appealed to many 'empty
nesters' and those collectors attracted to gentle, sweet youngsters. How did
Kaye become a doll maker and achieve her notable success?
Born in Quirindi, New South Wales, Australia, Kaye was ever a doll person.
Some doll enthusiasts are formed later in life, but Kaye was born that way and
born talented as well. Her first memories are of the dolls that "Santa" brought,
but she soon learned that disillusioning reality - there is no Santa. Fortunately,
her grandmother took over, and bought and dressed her dolls. Can you
imagine anything more special? Kaye has fond memories of sitting on their
verandah with dolls and a dolly tea set, playing tea parties all summer long.
Kaye was a crafty child, as she liked to make things with her hands.
Clothes pin dolls were among her first creations and she knitted sweaters
or jumpers in Australian- English, as well as scarves for her dolls. She was
also a big fan of paper dolls and whiled away many happy hours enjoying
them. During her teen years, she worked at a news
agency, magazine and newspaper shop which
